The Import of Justice on the rest of life
Over the past few weeks, I have listened to the lectures of Michael Sandel on Justice, and I can safely say that I've been deeply enriched by this introductory series on moral and political philosophy.
The point now, is about how these philosophies have an impact, on the lives lived everyday. The implications of these ideas come, especially in our daily interactions in the social realm, if not political. The attitude with which we begin to treat others implicitly reflect the viewpoints that we take.
Do we treat people as means to our own ends? What are our obligations to community, and what are the justification for any various responses?
However, to think that the investigations of these philosophies would give us 'final answers' to these problems, would be an extremely misguided thought. Philosophies only grant us the frames of thought to think with. Still, the attending of problems with these philosophical perspectives is necessary, to even begin to understand our own views and the views of others. As Sandel has said, we might not even agree in the end, but the important thing was to have engaged with the topic at all in the first place.
