How do you compare tragedies?

I had just finished watching Schindler's List, and I went away thinking that, well, seems that the Jews were justified in having their own state of Israel. Then again, how does the Holocaust compare with decades of colonial rule/subjugation?

To compare two different kinds of sufferings seems to be like talking past each other. And it's now all too difficult to unentangle wrongs and rights.
